Trends, Tours & Tips for the Discerning Traveler & Tour Operator

In this workshop, we’ll define ecotourism and discuss the benefits and challenges experienced by tourist destinations, local communities and travelers.  We’ll look at some of the current trends in ecotourism, and help you identify tours and destinations that are truly sustainable.  You’ll see pictures of and learn about community-based and indigenous lodges, and private ecotourism enterprises in Latin America, South Africa, the Caribbean, Nepal and the South Pacific.  And, we’ll discuss ways to travel more lightly and respectfully closer to home.

About the Instructor:  Abigail Rome is an independent consultant and small business owner.  Her company, Tierra Vista Tours & Consulting offers educational nature and ecotours to Central and South America and a variety of other international destinations.  It also provides research and writing services to non-profit organizations promoting conservation and sustainable development.

Abi has a Masters degree in plant ecology from Duke University, and spent ten years working with conservation NGOs in protected areas management, first in the eastern U.S. and then in South America.  She lived in Ecuador for five years, establishing and managing nature reserves and helping develop ecotourism in local communities.  She currently assists the Green Building Institute with programming and events management, and practices yoga in as many places in the world as she can.
