Organic Gardening "Building the Foundations of Sustainability" Class Series Taught by Local Organic Farmer, Brian T. Hughes
Everyone knows that unless you're one of the few hunter gatherers left in the 21st century, growing your own food is the best way to be green. Are you a novice ready to start a garden on your balcony or is a half-acre garden in your future? Are you a seasoned pro wanting to pick up some new gardening ideas? Or are you wanting to learn the fundamentals so you can start a garden in the future? Whatever your level of experience, or size garden you have in mind, you'll find something interesting in our Green Gardening Series of four classes this spring. Two indoor classes at the EnviroCenter in Jessup, and two classes at Shaw Farm in Columbia, MD (Certified Organic since 1997). These classes will be full of practical, hands-on, how-to’s, framed within a context of sustainability. Plans for how to set up a seed starting operation all the way to harvesting organically grown food from your own garden. Learn the best equipment for whatever scale you want to work on. Attendees will be able to plan their own garden, start their own seeds, and buy the right equipment to grow their own food.
Classes will be taught by Brian T. Hughes, farm manager at Shaw Farm. Brian has managed three organic farms in our region, studied Permaculture, and received a Bachelors degree in Landscape Architecture.
Class #4 May 22nd, 9am - 1pm. In this class we will cover types of irrigation, how to organically deal with weeds and pests, harvest tips and techniques, and more about the function and use of cover crops.
